Definition

An Encounter is defined a turning over a facedown Monster Card, and the actions that follow it.

An Encounter can be as short as picking up a key, unlocking a chest, or as long as fighting a Monster which keeps taking turns.

Before we get into the Turn order and variation, let’s quickly define what certain terms and phrases mean.

Evade Check - On an Encounter, the player rolls the dice to decide if the Monster attacks and hits the Hero. There will be a dice and a number of the Hero card. If the dice roll is equal or greater than than on the card, you evade the Monster attack, and can progress to your turn. You receive no damage.

(Boss) Monster Action - If you are unfortunate enough to roll lower than your evade check, you are Attacked by the Monster. Roll for them, and whatever the dice lands on you issue out that damage to the Hero.

Hero Action - similar to how Monster Actions are worked. You roll a dice, and whatever the dice lands on you deal to the Monster. If the player wishes to use an Ability Card, that is actioned here instead of a basic attack.

Healer Monster Action - If the Monster is paired with a Healer, they take their action at the end of the Hero Action provided the Monster is still alive.

Ghost Action - If a Ghost is going to Support/Haunt a Hero, the Ghost chooses how they wish to do so by flipping the card, and rolling as if they were a Hero.

Monster Special - If the Monster in question has a Special Ability tied to their card, refer to the guidebook for when it’s instantiated.

A number of these can be mixed together as the game progresses. As a general rule for turn order, Ghosts serve as the main priority, the Encounter Monster Action comes second, Hero third, and then any additional support for the Monster comes last. Repeat for as long as necessary.

Turn order and variation

The vast majority of Encounters will all playout the same. The Hero will fight the singular Monster and then move onto the next Encounter.

There are however other Encounters where the player will fight Multiple Monsters, or they might be supported by another player. Below are how these Encounters are structured, and under what conditions.

If the player is fighting against a single Monster.

Evade Check > Monster Action > Hero Action > Repeat.

If the player is fighting against a single Monster and that Monster is supported with a Healer specialised Monster.

Evade Check > Encounter Monster Action > Hero Action > Healer Monster Action >Repeat.

When the Encounter Monster is defeated, the player can then target the Healer Monster as if it was a standard Monster.
